Before you jet off to the job fair, remember to be mindful of some basic job fair etiquette:
- Preparation is key
With the majority of job hunting conducted online, job fairs offer a unique opportunity to meet with employers face-to-face. With that in mind, preparing ahead of time is crucial to making a great first impression. Come professionally dress and bring several copies of your resume. Consider putting together a one-minute “elevator speech” about who you are, your qualifications, and what type of position you’re interested in. - Do your research
Obtain a list of participating companies beforehand and identify the companies you’d like to visit. Learn more about each of these businesses and formulate practical questions. Remember, this is an opportunity to get first-hand insight and answers from company representatives – something that may prove helpful later in an interview. - Come alone
You may want to turn the job fair into a group outing, but it’s best to attend alone. This ensures that the recruiter will have your full attention and lets them know that you are not only serious about finding a job, but that you also respect their time.
- Keep an open mind
Don’t be quick to overlook a company if the name or industry doesn’t appear to fit with what you’re looking for. If you have time, visit a few companies that aren’t on your list as you may find unexpected opportunities.
- Follow up
During the fair, keep track of which companies you visited and collect the contact information of the people you speak to. After the fair, follow-up with those contacts by sending an email, a thank you letter, or making a phone call. It will show your gratitude for their time and keep your name fresh in their minds.
